Migrating and Upgrading to Joomla! 4.x • Errors on upgrade J3.10.12 to J4.4.8

I have followed the document at Joomla 3.x to 4.x Step by Step Migration - Joomla! Documentation

This is a very old site that I only use as a sandbox. I want to test the migration process before using it on a number of sites

The upgrade check showed some issues but all the extension providers' doco said that upgrade should be fine. One exception was a tiny whimsical extension that I kept called Clacks Overhead that I thought would be very low risk.

None the less, when the final warning before update listed 9 extensions that it was unhappy with, I disabled these. They were from Akeeba, JCE, Regular Labs and Joomlashack as well as Clacks Overhead.

The update finished with warnings (Refresh Manifest Cache failed), and matching errors (Error on updating manifest cache) for a different 9 extensions:

I saw another post here that suggested Refreshing Core Files. I tried that but it threw errors again.

I checked the live J3 site and none of these are actually shown as installed except Tags.

Also, whenever I go to any page in the backend there is a huge Toggle Menu panel. I can hide it with the red X at top right but it comes back as soon as I refresh or go to another page. Another post suggests that this is evidence of a serious problem

Can you help please? (I've wondered if removing old jos_ database tables could help)
